Holiday E-book Day 20: Reduce Recipe Clutter

When it comes to paper clutter, recipes take the cake (excuse the pun). Pages torn from magazines…online printouts…scraps of food packaging…index cards of family favorites—in random plies and places. Don't waste precious time this holiday season searching for your family's favorite recipes...get organized.

There are numerous ways to organize recipes, including software programs, online storage at magazine sites, and even make-your-own cookbook web sites. All great solutions—if you have the time and ambition!

If not, the easiest, fastest and least expensive method is to keep recipes in labeled file folders. There’s no need to download software, type, scan, paste onto paper, insert in plastic sleeves or put in a binder. The binder method is great in theory, but typically is hard to keep up. Instead:

    1. Organize file folders alphabetically by topic, such as:
    • Appetizers
    • Beverages
    • Bread
    • Breakfast/Brunch
    • Chicken/Poultry
    • Dessert
    • Fish/Seafood
    • Fruit
    • Ground Turkey
    • Holidays
    • Lamb
    • Lunch
    • Meat
    • Miscellaneous
    • Pasta/Pizza
    • Pork
    • Potatoes/Rice
    • Salad
    • Snacks
    • Soup
    • Veal
    • Veggies
    2. Place the folders in your kitchen file drawer, or carve out enough cabinet space for a portable plastic file bin. Or, retrofit a drawer (or cabinet pull-out) with a hanging file folder frame from the office supply store.

    3. To minimize how fat the files get, use your smart phone or iPad to take screen shots of online recipes and photos of magazine pages. Create phone photo albums that mirror your paper system and you’ll always know where to find the recipes.
